- Reclaiming Goodman Park: How KLCB is Revitalizing a Neighborhood Treasure
Goodman Park, nestled in the heart of the Lake Como neighborhood at 5413 Goodman Ave, has a rich history of service to its community. Since its dedication in 1967, this small but significant 0.14-acre park has symbolized hope and inclusivity in an area often overlooked. The Rise and Fall of Goodman Park A gift from Ruth Carter Johnson and J. Lee Johnson III, Goodman Park—originally named Como Mini Park—was envisioned as a non-discriminatory recreational space for Lake Como residents. Renamed in 1970, it quickly became a place of gathering, joy, and community connection. However, as the neighborhood faced economic and social challenges in the late 1980s, the park became a focal point for undesired and unlawful activities. Concerned residents, prioritizing safety, requested its closure and the removal of its amenities. Goodman Park, once a vibrant community asset, stood dormant for decades—a quiet reminder of unmet potential. A New Chapter: KLCB Adopts Goodman Park In 2017, the COMO/SUNSET HEIGHTS NEZ STRATEGIC PLAN , adopted by the Fort Worth City Council, included a bold recommendation: reopen Goodman Park and expand its footprint by incorporating adjacent surplus city property. This plan called on community stakeholders to collaborate with the City of Fort Worth’s Park and Recreation Department to breathe new life into the park. At Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB), we’ve accepted the challenge. Through our participation in the City of Fort Worth’s Adopt-A-Spot Program , KLCB has formally adopted Goodman Park for regular litter cleanups and ongoing maintenance activities. This program, which runs on voluntary five-year agreements, empowers organizations like ours to make meaningful and lasting environmental impacts. For Goodman Park, this means a cleaner, safer, and more inviting space for everyone. Community Support Fuels Action The Goodman Park Revitalization is a shared vision, and we’ve engaged Lake Como residents every step of the way. A recent community survey revealed overwhelming support for revitalization and identified three top priorities for reopening: Safety : Improved lighting and coordinated safety programs to make the park welcoming for all. Litter : Dedicated trash bins and community-led cleanup events to maintain the park’s beauty. Vehicular Traffic : Traffic calming measures and signage to ensure pedestrian safety. KLCB is addressing these concerns through collaboration with city departments and neighborhood partners. Upcoming Events and Initiatives To kick off our revitalization efforts, KLCB is hosting a Spring Planting Event at Goodman Park. This event will focus on installing a 10x10 flower bed, a requirement of our Adopt-A-Spot agreement. Together, we’ll beautify the space and take another step toward restoring the park’s legacy. Date : Saturday, March 22, 2025 Time : 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location : Goodman Park, 5413 Goodman Ave, Fort Worth, TX We’re calling on volunteers to join us! Whether you bring gardening gloves, a green thumb, or just enthusiasm, your support will make a difference. Reclaiming a Community Treasure Goodman Park’s story is one of resilience. From its hopeful beginnings in 1967 to its challenges in the late 20th century, this park has been a symbol of both community pride and perseverance. Now, with KLCB’s leadership and the collective effort of Lake Como residents, Goodman Park is poised for a brighter future. Together, we can transform this space into a safe, vibrant, and welcoming haven for generations to come. - Breaking Barriers in Lake Como: A Call for Inclusivity and Progress
The journey to progress often requires bold decisions and fresh perspectives. When I founded Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB) , I envisioned a community-led initiative focused on addressing the systemic challenges that have long hindered the growth and safety of the Lake Como neighborhood. Today, I’m excited to share a pivotal milestone in that journey: KLCB is now a registered "Redevelopment Organization" with the City of Fort Worth Community Engagement Office. Here’s what this means and why it matters for our community. What Led to This Decision? For years, Lake Como has faced unique challenges—from crime and litter to the perception of neglect—and solutions have often been met with resistance or exclusionary practices. Existing entities, while well-meaning, have not always welcomed new ideas or voices from all corners of our community, particularly those bringing fresh perspectives and progressive solutions. This lack of inclusivity motivated me to take action. By registering KLCB as a Redevelopment Organization, we now have a stronger platform to: Engage Residents : Empower neighbors to take ownership of their blocks through programs like On My Block (OMB). Tackle Core Issues : Address crime, illegal dumping, bulk waste, and other critical concerns. Unify Efforts : Bridge divides among residents, associations, and partners to create a shared vision for Lake Como’s future. How This Aligns with KLCB’s Mission Becoming a Redevelopment Organization isn’t just a label; it’s a natural extension of what KLCB already does. Our mission to create a stronger, safer, and more connected Lake Como aligns seamlessly with the goals of a Redevelopment Organization. Here’s why: Community-Based Leadership : At KLCB, every initiative is guided by residents and stakeholders who are deeply invested in the neighborhood’s well-being. Focus on Revitalization : Programs like OMB target public safety, beautification, and community engagement—key components of any successful redevelopment strategy. Support for Broader Development : While KLCB’s primary focus isn’t housing or commercial projects, our efforts lay the groundwork for broader economic and social renewal by making Lake Como a safer and more appealing place to live, work and play. Benefits of the Redevelopment Organization Designation This designation offers tangible benefits that will enhance our ability to serve the Lake Como community: Early Notifications : We now receive zoning and planning updates, allowing us to proactively advocate for community needs. Stronger Advocacy : Our voice carries more weight in discussions with city officials, developers, and other stakeholders. Aligned Goals : KLCB’s work intersects with broader urban development and environmental initiatives, positioning us as a critical partner in shaping Lake Como’s future. Why This Matters for You For residents and community organizations, this milestone represents an opportunity to unite around a shared vision for Lake Como. The challenges we face—from public safety to neighborhood disinvestment—can only be addressed through collaboration. By embracing this designation, KLCB is better equipped to: Advocate for equitable policies and resources. Foster partnerships that bring meaningful change. Preserve and celebrate the unique character of Lake Como. Moving Forward, Together As we look ahead to 2025, our goals remain clear: increase resident participation, reduce crime and litter, and foster a cohesive, engaged community. We invite you to join us in this journey. Whether through the On My Block program, attending events , or simply sharing your ideas, your involvement makes all the difference. - Community Advocacy Update: Kayak Kiosk Removed from Lake Como Park
CLICK HERE to read original blog post published Oct 17, 2024. At Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB), we are committed to ensuring the voices of Lake Como residents are heard and prioritized in decisions affecting our neighborhood. We are pleased to share an important update regarding the unattended kayak rental kiosk installed at Lake Como Park—a concern that many of you voiced through our recent survey . After numerous discussions with city officials and the vendor, Outdoor Vending Solutions has decided to terminate their contract for the Lake Como location. This outcome reflects the power of community advocacy and highlights the importance of prioritizing public safety and transparency. Why This Matters The installation of the kiosk raised significant concerns about safety, including the lack of life jackets, lifeguards, and proper kayak entry points. It also underscored the need for improved communication and consultation between the City of Fort Worth and Lake Como residents. What’s Next? While the kiosk removal is a victory for community advocacy, it also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for: Resident Involvement: No decisions about Lake Como should be made without consulting the people who live here. Safety Prioritization: KLCB will continue to work with the city to ensure that any future projects prioritize public safety. Collaborative Solutions: KLCB remains dedicated to fostering partnerships with city officials and organizations to create sustainable, equitable improvements in our community. Thank You, Lake Como! This resolution would not have been possible without the engagement and support of the Lake Como community. Your participation in surveys, events, and advocacy efforts demonstrates the strength and resilience of our neighborhood. As we move forward, we encourage you to stay connected with us for updates on other projects and initiatives impacting our community. This year, 2025, marks an incredible milestone for the Lake Como neighborhood: 120 years of history, resilience, and community pride. As we celebrate this rich legacy, Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB) is proud to announce another historic achievement—our designation as a registered “Neighborhood Redevelopment Organization” with the City of Fort Worth. This new status not only honors Lake Como’s storied past but also positions KLCB to lead the charge toward a brighter, more sustainable future for our community. What Does It Mean to Be a “Redevelopment Organization”? Registering as a "Neighborhood Redevelopment Organization" affirms KLCB’s grassroots leadership and mission to revitalize Lake Como. It means that KLCB is now officially recognized as a key player in community-based leadership, redevelopment efforts, and neighborhood planning. Here's how this designation aligns with who we are and what we stand for: Community-Based Leadership: KLCB is driven by the voices, needs, and aspirations of Lake Como residents, ensuring that our work reflects the priorities of the people who live here. Support for Redevelopment Projects: While KLCB doesn’t directly oversee large-scale housing or commercial developments, our focus on infrastructure, public safety, and community engagement indirectly supports these efforts by creating a more appealing and cohesive neighborhood. How This Designation Helps Lake Como Becoming a Redevelopment Organization enhances KLCB’s ability to advocate for Lake Como’s future in meaningful ways: Early Courtesy Notification System: We now receive early updates on zoning and planning changes, allowing us to ensure the community’s needs are considered in development decisions. - Why Public Safety Matters
Public safety is fundamental to transforming Lake Como into a vibrant and welcoming community. Crime, illegal dumping, and litter are persistent challenges that undermine the quality of life and the sense of pride and ownership within our neighborhood. Addressing these issues is essential to achieving our vision of a resilient Lake Como, where residents feel safe, invested, and in control of their surroundings. While crime can occur in any community, when its frequency and severity increase, the consequences ripple throughout the neighborhood, affecting everyone. It diminishes the community’s reputation, discourages potential residents and investors, and can lower property values while increasing insurance costs. Illegal dumping and pervasive litter not only mar the physical landscape of Lake Como but also pose safety hazards and create a negative perception of the area. Like crime, these issues deter investment and community engagement, preventing us from building the vibrant neighborhood we envision. To foster a future where optimism thrives and residents are empowered, Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB) has designed and implemented the On My Block Program , a comprehensive public safety strategy that utilizes best practices to tackle crime, illegal dumping, and litter in Lake Como. Our goal is to restore pride, enhance livability, and inspire collective action to make Lake Como a safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable place for everyone. Crime Comprehensive crime prevention strategies are essential to revitalizing Lake Como and aligning with Keep Lake Como Beautiful’s mission to create a vibrant and welcoming community. Effective crime prevention addresses both Place and People, focusing on strengthening our neighborhood and empowering residents to take control of their surroundings. Place-focused crime prevention strategies include the following: Control physical deterioration and disorder. By addressing graffiti, trash accumulation, and other signs of neglect, we can reduce crime and fear by showing that Lake Como is a cared-for and resilient community. Target “Hot Spots” Focusing on areas with higher levels of criminal or nuisance behavior can significantly reduce crime. Through initiatives like increased lighting, clean-ups, and community presence, we reclaim these spaces for positive use. The Como/Sunset Heights NEZ Strategic Plan proposes a comprehensive, holistic approach intended to revitalize the Como neighborhood. By thoughtfully designing our buildings and landscapes, we can deter potential offenders and enhance the sense of safety. This approach aligns with our vision of a community that adapts to changes and works together to maintain a safer environment. People-focused crime prevention strategies focus on strengthening neighborhoods and the residents that live there. Residents that work effectively together can help deter criminal activity. People-focused crime prevention strategies include: Development of social capital within the neighborhood. Social capital is the glue that holds neighborhoods together. Strengthening social capital includes developing positive relationships that build mutual trust that enables residents to work together for the betterment of the community. An example crime prevention initiative is a neighborhood crime watch program to facilitate social cohesion, help residents learn how to identify and resist crime, and maintain the neighborhood’s physical environment. Strengthen the families and individuals that reside in neighborhoods. Neighborhoods are as strong as the residents who live in them. Assisting families with child care, constructive family dispute resolution, employment, mental health, and substance abuse services builds human infrastructure and is essential to maintaining a strong neighborhood. Illegal Dumping & Bulk Waste Piles The curve at Wellesley and Merrick, a notorious Illegal Dumping Site Illegal dumping, also known as “open dumping,” “fly dumping,” or “midnight dumping,” occurs when waste is disposed of in unauthorized areas, often late at night or from vehicles along roadsides. This act is typically done to avoid disposal fees or the effort required for proper waste management. Commonly dumped materials include construction debris, auto parts, scrap tires, appliances, furniture, yard waste, and household trash. Illegal dumping poses significant health and safety risks to the Lake Como community. These dump sites are often easily accessible, especially to children, exposing them to physical hazards like sharp edges and harmful chemicals. They also attract rodents, insects, and other vermin, further endangering public health. For instance, stagnant water in discarded tires creates ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which can multiply rapidly and contribute to the spread of diseases. Additionally, runoff from these sites can harm local plants and wildlife, impacting the environment we strive to protect. At Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB) , we envision a resilient community where every resident feels safe, empowered, and proud of their surroundings. Illegal dumping not only tarnishes the physical beauty of our neighborhood but also undermines our collective efforts to create a vibrant and welcoming environment. These sites often become magnets for further dumping and other criminal activities, diminishing property values and the overall quality of life in Lake Como. Our mission is to transform Lake Como through comprehensive strategies that address illegal dumping, encourage responsible waste disposal, and foster a sense of ownership and accountability among residents. By working together, we can eliminate illegal dumping, protect our environment, and build a brighter, healthier future for all. Litter Litter in lake Como Litter, like illegal dumping, is a blight on our neighborhood, diminishing Lake Como’s appeal and hindering its economic development potential. Litter not only mars the beauty of our community but also clogs stormwater drainage systems and pollutes nearby waterways, threatening both our environment and quality of life. National studies reveal that the presence of litter significantly contributes to more littering—essentially, litter begets litter. This highlights the importance of ongoing clean-up and beautification efforts, which are core to Keep Lake Como Beautiful's mission of transforming our community into a more vibrant and welcoming place. Research also shows that the primary source of litter is people choosing to litter, with younger individuals being more likely to do so than older ones. To address this, Keep Lake Como Beautiful focuses on targeted messaging and active engagement of youth in clean-up and beautification activities. By involving our younger residents, we can instill a sense of pride and responsibility that reduces littering behavior. Our vision for Lake Como is a resilient community where residents take ownership of their environment. Through education, enforcement of litter ordinances, and fostering a culture of social and peer accountability, we strive to create a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable neighborhood for all. Together, we can build a future where every resident plays a part in keeping Lake Como beautiful. - The Impact of Bandit Signs on Lake Como's Progress
When you see a "We Buy Houses for Cash" sign on a telephone pole or a roadside advertisement for payday loans, it may seem harmless or merely annoying. However, for neighborhoods like Lake Como, these bandit signs represent far more than just visual clutter—they are symptomatic of deeper, systemic issues that hinder progress and perpetuate inequities in historically under- resourced communities. At Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB), we recognize that these signs reflect and exacerbate challenges such as disinvestment, displacement, and systemic racism. By addressing this issue, we aim to further our mission of building a stronger, safer, and more connected community. Why Bandit Signs Hurt Communities Like Lake Como 1. Neighborhood Disinvestment The unregulated presence of bandit signs signals neglect. Often advertising predatory services, these signs paint a picture of a community undervalued by legitimate investors. This discourages sustainable development and contributes to cycles of resource deprivation. 2. Displacement of Residents and Neighborhood Culture Bandit signs promoting quick home sales disproportionately target financially vulnerable, long-term residents. These offers often lead to below-market transactions, accelerating displacement and eroding the cultural heritage and identity of the neighborhood. 3. Lack of Market Control Predatory tactics advertised on bandit signs strip residents of market knowledge and control. By encouraging rushed sales, these signs contribute to housing commodification and a loss of affordability, further straining community stability. 4. Poor Design and Land Use The aesthetic and environmental damage caused by bandit signs undermines efforts to beautify neighborhoods. Visual clutter and improperly disposed signage perpetuate perceptions of neglect, devaluing community spaces. 5. Cycle of Poverty Many bandit signs promise quick fixes for financial distress, such as payday loans or credit repair schemes. Instead of offering sustainable solutions, they trap residents in a deeper cycle of poverty, exploiting their vulnerabilities. 6. Individual Prejudice and Bigotry The targeting of Lake Como by bandit signs reflects implicit biases about its residents. These signs perpetuate stereotypes, fostering a sense of inferiority among long-term community members. 7. Institutionalized Racism Under- resourced neighborhoods like Lake Como face systemic inequities in the enforcement of city codes. While wealthier neighborhoods enjoy stricter regulation of public spaces, bandit signs proliferate in communities where residents already contend with systemic disadvantages. 8. Demographic Instability By promoting rapid property sales, bandit signs contribute to the destabilization of neighborhood demographics. This rapid turnover undermines community cohesion and long-term connections among residents. What KLCB Is Doing to Address the Problem To combat the harmful effects of bandit signs and ensure that businesses engage responsibly with the community, KLCB is implementing several strategies: Advocacy for Regulation KLCB collaborates with local code enforcement agencies to advocate for stricter penalties on illegal signage. This includes ensuring that enforcement efforts are equitable and extend to all neighborhoods, regardless of socioeconomic status, to eliminate systemic inequities in public space maintenance. Resident Education Through public awareness campaigns, KLCB educates residents about the risks and predatory tactics associated with services advertised on bandit signs. By empowering residents with information, we aim to reduce the effectiveness of these exploitative practices. Read the Ordinance . Community Beautification Block Buddies , dedicated community volunteers, regularly remove unauthorized signs and replace them with initiatives that highlight the vibrancy of Lake Como. These efforts restore pride in public spaces while challenging the visual clutter and negative perceptions created by bandit signs. Engagement with Local Businesses KLCB encourages businesses to reflect on their impact within the community. We invite them to contribute positively by sponsoring public safety events, supporting beautification efforts, or collaborating with KLCB on ethical initiatives that align with community values. For instance, we reached out to Eskimo Hut Frozen Daiquiris To-Go to address their signage practices, urging them to prioritize integrity and respect for Lake Como’s development over short-term promotions. Challenging Implicit Bias and Inequity By addressing the targeted placement of bandit signs in Lake Como, KLCB sheds light on how implicit biases and systemic inequalities affect underserved neighborhoods. This includes confronting disparities in the enforcement of city codes and encouraging equitable treatment for all communities. These actions are designed to transform Lake Como into a neighborhood where businesses, residents, and organizations work collaboratively to create a safer, cleaner, and more connected community. Through sustained efforts, KLCB continues to challenge practices that undermine progress while fostering opportunities for meaningful and ethical partnerships. - Lake Como Residents Demand Immediate Action on Unattended Kayak Rental Kiosk
On behalf of Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB), a coalition of residents, community associations, and partners, we are addressing a significant grievance concerning the recent installation of an unattended kayak rental kiosk at Lake Como Park. This kiosk was placed without community consultation, further deepening the disconnect between the City of Fort Worth and the Lake Como neighborhood. Lack of Community Consultation The Lake Como community was not informed or consulted regarding the installation of this rental kiosk. It is concerning that a vendor with no ties to the local community has been allowed to operate in Lake Como Park without input from the residents who are directly impacted. As stakeholders, the voices of Lake Como residents should always be heard when decisions are made concerning public spaces in their neighborhood. Safety Concerns Highlighted by Drowning Incident This installation follows a tragic drowning incident on July 29, 2024, at Lake Como Park. The availability of kayaks for rent without proper safety measures such as life jackets, lifeguards, or safe kayak entry points poses an ongoing risk to park visitors. The community is still grieving this loss, and it is imperative that the City of Fort Worth address the dangers of operating the kiosk under its current conditions. Eroded Public Trust and Call for Accountability The installation of this kiosk without proper engagement has eroded the trust of the Lake Como community in the City of Fort Worth's dedication to public safety and transparency. Historically underserved communities, such as Lake Como, should never be left out of decisions impacting their safety and well-being. This lack of transparency only reinforces the notion that the voices of these residents are being ignored. KLCB's Request for Corrective Action To ensure the safety and trust of the community are restored, KLCB is requesting immediate action from the City of Fort Worth: Implementation of Immediate Safety Measures: Install life jackets and safety equipment at the kiosk. Assign lifeguards during rental hours to ensure public safety. Construct safe ramps and entry points for kayakers. Community Meeting: KLCB requests a public meeting with city officials, the vendor (Outdoor Vending Solutions), and Lake Como residents to address safety concerns and gather community input on future decisions impacting the park. Lake Como Stands United The concerns expressed in this grievance letter are shared by the broader Lake Como community. We are committed to working with the City of Fort Worth to ensure that public safety and community engagement are prioritized moving forward. Lake Como is a resilient neighborhood, and KLCB will continue to advocate for its well-being. We trust that the City of Fort Worth understands the gravity of this situation and will take immediate action to address the concerns raised.
