Goodman Park, nestled in the heart of the Lake Como neighborhood at 5413 Goodman Ave, has a rich history of service to its community. Since its dedication in 1967, this small but significant 0.14-acre park has symbolized hope and inclusivity in an area often overlooked.
The Rise and Fall of Goodman Park
A gift from Ruth Carter Johnson and J. Lee Johnson III, Goodman Park—originally named Como Mini Park—was envisioned as a non-discriminatory recreational space for Lake Como residents. Renamed in 1970, it quickly became a place of gathering, joy, and community connection.
However, as the neighborhood faced economic and social challenges in the late 1980s, the park became a focal point for undesired and unlawful activities. Concerned residents, prioritizing safety, requested its closure and the removal of its amenities. Goodman Park, once a vibrant community asset, stood dormant for decades—a quiet reminder of unmet potential.

A New Chapter: KLCB Adopts Goodman Park
In 2017, the COMO/SUNSET HEIGHTS NEZ STRATEGIC PLAN, adopted by the Fort Worth City Council, included a bold recommendation: reopen Goodman Park and expand its footprint by incorporating adjacent surplus city property. This plan called on community stakeholders to collaborate with the City of Fort Worth’s Park and Recreation Department to breathe new life into the park.
At Keep Lake Como Beautiful (KLCB), we’ve accepted the challenge. Through our participation in the City of Fort Worth’s Adopt-A-Spot Program, KLCB has formally adopted Goodman Park for regular litter cleanups and ongoing maintenance activities. This program, which runs on voluntary five-year agreements, empowers organizations like ours to make meaningful and lasting environmental impacts. For Goodman Park, this means a cleaner, safer, and more inviting space for everyone.
Community Support Fuels Action
The Goodman Park Revitalization is a shared vision, and we’ve engaged Lake Como residents every step of the way. A recent community survey revealed overwhelming support for revitalization and identified three top priorities for reopening:
Safety: Improved lighting and coordinated safety programs to make the park welcoming for all.
Litter: Dedicated trash bins and community-led cleanup events to maintain the park’s beauty.
Vehicular Traffic: Traffic calming measures and signage to ensure pedestrian safety.
KLCB is addressing these concerns through collaboration with city departments and neighborhood partners.
Upcoming Events and Initiatives

To kick off our revitalization efforts, KLCB is hosting a Spring Planting Event at Goodman Park. This event will focus on installing a 10x10 flower bed, a requirement of our Adopt-A-Spot agreement. Together, we’ll beautify the space and take another step toward restoring the park’s legacy.

Now, with KLCB’s leadership and the collective effort of Lake Como residents, Goodman Park is poised for a brighter future.
Together, we can transform this space into a safe, vibrant, and welcoming haven for generations to come.
